I have no business enjoying running.

Mike Medvig - Slow RunnerEvery step I take produces between 400 and 750 pounds of force. If you take an average of 1,000 steps a mile, that is a whopping 400,000 to 750,000 pounds of force every 10 to 12 minutes. Do that 10 times in a row, towel off, drink a beer and get some pizza. Do it again the next week.

There is no way I should be doing some of the things I do.

Running is not a big man’s game but I wasn’t a big guy when I got into it.

For the record, in 2016 I ran a mile in 9:57. I was waiting to hear some sort of sonic boom but it didn’t happen.

No, I am not a fast runner but my goal is to run faster and more efficiently.

And that is the point of this website. Hopefully by making myself a better runner I can make you one too.

Why I love running.

I am sure I will have posts that go into more detail about why I like longer distances.

For the sake of brevity, let’s just say.

  • It is the only time I truly have peace of mind.
  • Long races scare me and bring the best out of me.
  • I like to get uncomfortable and see who I really am.

Why am I sharing all of this with you?

Fitness professionals are some of the most insecure people around. That is why they make videos with fake weights, always try and look perfect and do anything they can to hide their weaknesses.

Me? There are a number of things I am not good at. I am comfortable with that.

I am not Mr. YouTube guy or awesome Instagram dude. To be honest, I really don’t care if you like me or not.

What I am is honest. This blog is an attempt to share my challenge with the world.

I was not born a gifted runner and will never be. What I can do is maximize my potential by looking at the numbers, trying new things and putting in honest hard work.

The Humble Early Days

At age 15 I was 6’0, 140 pounds. Perfect for long distance running. Uhhh did I mention I had severe asthma and allergies and spent most of my time sitting on the couch watching tv?

I couldn’t run a lap around the track without stopping and I couldn’t bench 45 pounds. I was weak and miserable.

Back then Doctors had a simple way of dealing with asthma.

Doctor: “Is it hard to breath when you run?”

Me: “Yes.”

Doctor: “Don’t run then.”

Me: “Can I lift weights?”

Doctor: “Don’t do that either.”

Luckily I have always questioned authority.

I am not a gifted athlete.

Ever read an interview or listen to a podcast with a runner and it goes something like this,

“I was hanging around in college drinking beer and partying and one of my friends was going to do a race. He said I should try it. I did and I won. At that point I thought I might be a pretty good runner.”

Kind of makes you sick doesn’t it? I mean good for them but really?

I listen to a certain podcast where the host benches over 650 pounds. Oh, but he was benching 500 in high school.

I have always had to work for everything. I am a grinder.

I am gifted in other areas but when it comes to running, I grind it out. When I see pictures of myself, it always looks like I am in pain. Simply not true. I am just focused.

While the gazelles have finished, gotten their trophies, stretched and left the building, I am still out there.

I do this to make myself a better person.

So hopefully you will enjoy the website, get some laughs and maybe learn a thing or two from this old grinder.
